What is HPV? When Should a Smear Test Be Done?

HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is one of the most common causes of cervical cancer in women. However, early diagnosis is possible with regular screening.

1. What is HPV?

HPV is a sexually transmitted virus. Some types can cause cancer, while others only cause warts. It usually shows no symptoms and can progress unnoticed.

2. What is a Smear Test?

A smear test is a screening method that identifies abnormal cells using a sample taken from the cervix. It plays a major role in early detection of cervical cancer.

3. When Should It Be Done?

  • The first test should be taken at age 21 or within 3 years after becoming sexually active.
  • After age 30, it is recommended to perform the test together with an HPV test.
  • Even if there are no symptoms, regular screening every 3 years is advised.

4. Does the Test Hurt?

A smear test is quick and painless. It usually takes 1–2 minutes, with minimal discomfort.

5. Does the Vaccine Protect You?

The HPV vaccine provides strong protection against the cancer-causing types of HPV. It is recommended between ages 9–26, but can also be administered at older ages.
