HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is one of the most common causes of cervical cancer in women. However, early diagnosis is possible with regular screening.
1. What is HPV?
HPV is a sexually transmitted virus. Some types can cause cancer, while others only cause warts. It usually shows no symptoms and can progress unnoticed.
2. What is a Smear Test?
A smear test is a screening method that identifies abnormal cells using a sample taken from the cervix. It plays a major role in early detection of cervical cancer.
3. When Should It Be Done?
- The first test should be taken at age 21 or within 3 years after becoming sexually active.
- After age 30, it is recommended to perform the test together with an HPV test.
- Even if there are no symptoms, regular screening every 3 years is advised.
4. Does the Test Hurt?
A smear test is quick and painless. It usually takes 1–2 minutes, with minimal discomfort.
5. Does the Vaccine Protect You?
The HPV vaccine provides strong protection against the cancer-causing types of HPV. It is recommended between ages 9–26, but can also be administered at older ages.
