Why Do Menstrual Irregularities Occur? When Should You See a Doctor?

The menstrual cycle is an important indicator of women’s health. Every woman’s pattern is different, but noticeable changes may indicate an underlying health problem.

1. What Is Menstrual Irregularity?

Having periods too early or too late, very short or very long cycles, excessively heavy bleeding, or complete absence of menstruation are considered irregularities.

2. Possible Causes

  • Hormonal imbalances (especially during puberty and menopause)
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Severe stress or rapid weight changes
  • Uterine issues (fibroids, polyps)

3. When Should You See a Doctor?

  • If your cycles are longer than 35 days or shorter than 21 days
  • If your periods are painful, clot-filled, or excessively heavy
  • If you haven’t had a period for 3 consecutive months
  • If you experience bleeding after intercourse

In such cases, it is recommended to consult a gynecologist.
